What is sciatica?
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve — the longest nerve in the body, running from the lower back through the buttock and down each leg. It typically occurs when a herniated disc, bone spur, or narrowing of the spine compresses part of the nerve.
True sciatica usually affects only one side of the body and can range from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or even excruciating pain. Some people also experience numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot.
Common symptoms
- Pain that radiates from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg
- Sharp or shooting pain that may worsen when sitting
- Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
- Weakness in the affected leg
- Pain that increases with coughing or sneezing
- Difficulty standing up or walking
When to get assessed: If you're experiencing any combination of these symptoms, particularly if they've lasted more than a few days, a proper assessment can help determine whether it's true sciatica and what's causing it. Early intervention often leads to better outcomes.
What causes sciatica?
- Herniated or bulging lumbar disc — the most common cause
- Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
- Piriformis syndrome — where the piriformis muscle in the buttock irritates the sciatic nerve
- Degenerative disc disease
- Spondylolisthesis (a vertebra slipping forward)
Chiropractic care for sciatica
At Thurles Chiropractic Clinic, Anne conducts a thorough examination to identify the specific cause of your sciatic pain. This ensures the treatment plan targets the actual source of the problem, not just the symptoms.
Treatment may include:
- Gentle spinal adjustments to reduce nerve compression and restore proper joint mechanics
- Specific stretches and exercises to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve
- Advice on positions and movements that can ease symptoms at home
- A graduated rehabilitation plan to restore function and prevent recurrence
Recovery expectations
Most cases of sciatica respond well to conservative chiropractic care, with many patients experiencing significant improvement within several weeks. Anne will monitor your progress at each visit and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
