Why neck pain is so common
The cervical spine (your neck) is remarkably flexible, supporting the weight of your head — roughly 5kg — while allowing you to look up, down, and side to side. This combination of mobility and load-bearing makes it vulnerable to strain and dysfunction.
In today's world of smartphones, laptops, and long commutes, neck pain has become increasingly prevalent. The position we hold our heads in while looking at screens places enormous extra stress on the cervical spine and surrounding muscles.
Common causes of neck pain
- Poor posture — especially forward head posture from screen use
- Muscle tension and stress
- Sleeping in an awkward position
- Cervical joint restriction or dysfunction
- Whiplash or trauma from a car accident
- Cervical disc problems
- Degenerative changes (cervical spondylosis)
Neck pain and headaches: Many tension headaches and even some migraines originate from problems in the upper cervical spine. If you experience regular headaches alongside neck stiffness, there may well be a connection worth investigating.

When to seek help
If your neck pain has persisted for more than a few days, if it's affecting your ability to drive or work, or if it's accompanied by headaches, numbness, or tingling in the arms, it's worth getting assessed. Early treatment often leads to faster recovery.
