How hip and knee problems develop
The hips and knees are the body's largest weight-bearing joints, and they work closely together as part of the kinetic chain. When one is affected, the other often compensates — which is why hip problems frequently lead to knee issues and vice versa.
Pain in these joints can develop gradually from wear and tear, arise suddenly from an injury, or result from biomechanical imbalances elsewhere in the body — including the pelvis, lower back, and feet.
Common causes we assess for
- Osteoarthritis — wear and tear of the joint cartilage
- Bursitis — inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs around the joint
- Muscle imbalances affecting joint loading
- IT band syndrome — common in runners
- Pelvic dysfunction referring pain to the hip
- Meniscus or ligament strain in the knee
- Patellofemoral pain syndrome (runner's knee)
- Referred pain from the lower back or sacroiliac joint
The bigger picture: Hip and knee pain rarely exists in isolation. A chiropractor looks at the whole kinetic chain — from your feet and ankles to your pelvis and lower back — to understand why the joint is under stress and how to address it.
How chiropractic care can help
Anne assesses not just the painful joint itself, but the way you move, stand, and load your body. This broader perspective often reveals contributing factors that more focused approaches might miss.
Treatment may include:
- Joint mobilisation to improve range of motion
- Pelvic and spinal adjustments to improve biomechanics
- Soft tissue therapy for tight or overloaded muscles
- Targeted strengthening exercises for joint stability
- Gait analysis and movement correction
- Advice on activity modification and self-management
Staying active with joint pain
One of the biggest misconceptions about hip and knee pain is that you should rest completely. In most cases, gentle, appropriate movement is an important part of recovery. Anne will help you understand what activities are safe and beneficial, and which to modify while your joint heals.
